Job Description
Animal Science encompasses various disciplines such as animal nutrition, physiology, genetics, reproduction, and health. Conducting experiments and research in these areas requires a sound understanding of laboratory equipment and their proper handling. However, the individuals working in animal science at Wolaita Sodo University have not all received adequate training in this aspect. The proper handling and management of laboratory equipment is crucial to ensure accurate and reliable results, maintain laboratory safety, and prolong the lifespan of costly equipment. Inadequate knowledge and skills in this area can lead to equipment malfunction, data contamination, or even accidents in the laboratory.
To address this challenge, the university is requesting a Virtual Service Pilot Participant (VSPP) to build the capacity of 3 to 4 laboratory technicians who are responsible for laboratory equipment handling and management through training seasons on key components such as laboratory safety, equipment use, storage, and handling, prevention measures, compliance, and practical exercises.
Specifically, the training will be on gas chromatography (GC) machine handling and management to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate operations, which are essential for animal science research and experimentation. These trainings will enhance the skills of laboratory staff and ensure sustainable actions and measures are implemented into the university’s laboratory protocols.
Wolaita Sodo University has not previously worked with a Peace Corps Volunteer or a VSPP. They understand that the role of a VSPP is very different than a two-year Volunteer.
