Purpose of Job
To provide interpretation and translation services, and to ensure that all the documents of Africa CDC are prepared in all the working languages of the African Union, are of an impeccable standard in terminology, syntax, style and presentation.

Main Functions
  • To provide proper, clear, faithful interpretation from one or more AU working languages into one or more AU working language during various conferences and meetings of Africa CDC using standard, clear and accurate language.
  • To translate properly documents from one of the AUC working languages into the AU working languages, ensuring the highest standard of accuracy and maintaining the spirit, context, quality, technical language and nuances of the original version, using precise, clear and proper terminology.
  • Read manuscripts with an editorial eye, giving attention to syntax, grammar, style and presentation, inconsistencies or missing parts in the documents and if any passages are still particularly difficult to understand, carryout some light copy editing.
  • Check references in research and study documents, as regards the referencing style, and help select and compile terminological materials.
  • Check and revise all texts translated from other AU working languages into English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Kiswahili and Arabic according to the original, to ensure accurate (terminology, style, etc.) and meaningful translation.
  • Provide leadership on linguistic matters and supervise Translators / Interpreters and distribute documents for translation among those contracted to work with the office in this regard.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

Academic Requirements and Relevant Experience
  • University Master’s Degree in Linguistics, Interpretations or related fields and at least ten (10) years of progressive relevant work experience in interpretation and translation out of which six (6) years should be at expert level and three (3) at supervisory level.
  • Candidates with University Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Interpretations or related field and twelve (12) years’ progressive and relevant experience in interpretation and translation of which six (6) years should be at expert level and three (3) at supervisory level.
Required Skills
  • Experience in setting up and managing NPHIs.
  • Proven ability to provide technical assistance and training.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in one of the AU official working languages (French, English, Portuguese, Arabic or Spanish); fluency in another AU language(s) is an added advantage. Fluency in English and French or any other AU official working languages.
