World Bank Job Vacancy in Ethiopia 2024:

The World Bank Ethiopia Country Office is hiring up to three (3) short-term consultants to support energy sector engagement in Ethiopia.  The positions are based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and open to Ethiopian nationals.

The World Bank on-going energy portfolio and pipeline of projects in Ethiopia include support for power sector reforms; investment projects on power transmission, distribution, and grid electrification; solar mini grids & standalone solar systems for households and communities; clean cooking and improved cook stoves; and interconnection with neighboring countries as part of the efforts to bring Ethiopia connected to the regional electricity network. 


Position 1: Junior Professional Associate

Selection Criteria

  • Graduate degree and minimum of master’s level qualification in economics, social policy or related sector
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in jobs, skills, livelihoods programs and interventions
  • Knowledge of the social protection and jobs agenda including productive inclusion and youth employment
  • Strong analytical skills and proven ability to conduct and oversee policy relevant research, translate theory into practical applications, and adapt professional knowledge and technical skills to analyze, diagnose and propose solutions to policy issues and challenges
  • Ability to convey analysis in easily communicable and compelling fashion, and on often short turnaround times. Demonstrated ability to capture knowledge and communicate main messages in knowledge briefs and policy notes, as well as power point presentations for high level audiences
  • Experience in delivering results in challenging and low-capacity contexts including in Africa would be an asset
  • Proven pro-active engagement, forward looking and independent thinking, as well as initiative that leads to results
  • Ability to maintain client relationships in the face of conflicting demands or directions and provides evidence-based advice and solutions based on sound diagnosis and knowledge
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, judgement, and proven ability to work in a team and intercultural environment, with minimal supervision
  • Proven track record of multi-tasking, managing competing demands and effectively time-managing tasks
  • Willingness to work and live in an FCV country

Position 2: Junior Professional Associate

Selection Criteria

  • Master’s degree in telecommunications, engineering, computer science, economics, or related public policy or law with a focus on technology or ICT  and related field. Also  a minimum of 3 years of experience in ICT / Digital Economy policy and regulation and/or ICT / Digital Economy project design and implementation – or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Working knowledge of the ecosystem of inter-related policies, strategies, institutions, laws and regulations relevant to the ICT sector and digital transformation of economies and societies  
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills, including ability to think strategically and innovatively about the role of digital technologies for socio-economic development and for transformation in other sectors of the economy.    
  • Firm understanding of digital technologies, digital transformation of society, and digitally enabled business model trends relevant to socio-economic development in Africa (and in particular in Eastern and Southern Africa) context and enthusiasm to stay abreast of new innovations.  Experience in Fragile Conflict and Violence environment would be an additional plus. 
  • Good client engagement skills, taking responsibility and accountability for timely response to client queries, requests or needs, working to remove obstacles that may impede execution or project success. 
  • Excellent written communication and verbal communication skills in English (in addition to Portuguese if Mozambique based and French if Madagascar based as additional preferred languages). Solid presentation skills, using charts, graphs and other data presentation techniques appropriately to communicate data, technical information, or complex concepts to non-specialists in a clear, easily understandable and effective manner. 
  • Strong drive for results, taking personal ownership and accountability to meet deadlines and achieve agreed-upon results. 
  • Strong business judgment and analytical decision making, analyzing facts and data to support sound and logical business decisions. 
  • Proven ability to function effectively as a team member of multi-disciplinary teams. 
  • Enthusiasm for, and commitment to development work 
  • Willingness and ability to travel to remote areas in the region if required. 
  • Field experience in developing countries a plus
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia or Antananarivo,Madagascar or Maputo,Mozambique

Position 3: Investment Officer

Selection Criteria

•  Master’s degree or equivalent professional qualification in Business, Finance, Economics, Agribusiness, or another relevant field.

•  Over 8 years of relevant experience in project and/or program development, producing feasibility studies, hands-on advisory and/or consulting functions in emerging markets.

•  Strong experience in investment banking, private equity, fund management or related areas with direct involvement in investment transactions.

•  Strong quantitative skills; familiarity with company evaluation and valuation; and proven experience with designing and/or working with financial models.

•  Experience in project/program management, including executing against implementation plans with defined business development milestones.

•  Ability to engage with private sector clients, local and national governments and other stakeholders to encourage pioneering business and market development.

•  Proven track record in nurturing client relationships, resolving challenging issues and ability to deal sensitively in multi-cultural environments. 

•  Demonstrated ability to deliver results under tight timetables; strong organizational, administrative, project and task management skills.

•  A genuine commitment to development and to the World Bank Group and IFC’s mission, strategy and values.

•  Understanding of IFC’s strategic priorities and changing business model against the backdrop of IFC 3.0.

•  Outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills.

•  Strong written and verbal communications skills in English.
