Role purpose:

Reporting to the Product Manager - M-PESA Enterprise Payments, the Product Specialist - M-PESA Open APIs will bridge the gap between technical teams and business goals, ensuring our M-PESA Open APIs deliver real value to developers and partners.

 

The role will be responsible for creating clean Open API designs, solve integration challenges, and build tools developers enjoy using. Working in close collaboration with other product owners and engineers, the role shall involve product API enhancements for C2B, B2C, Merchant and Fintech Integrations, gathering customer feedback, improving our Open APIs to make them competitive.



Key accountabilities and decision ownership:



Build the M-PESA Open API Roadmap

  • Shape the vision and strategy for our M-PESA Open API platform based on what developers need and where the market is heading
  • Decide which M-PESA Open API features to build next (think new endpoints, real-time capabilities, better docs) working with other product leads.

API Design & Developer Experience

  • Work with Product leads and engineers to design M-PESA Open APIs with scalability, security, and ease of integration in mind.
  • Improve API documentation, SDKs, code samples, and sandbox environments to boost adoption.
  • Turn technical jargon into clear docs, tutorials, and sample code anyone can use.

 

Grow M-PESA Open API Community

  • Lead Developer Relations to engage API users, gather feedback, and drive community growth to engage API users and gather feedback
  • Track how developers use our APIs and find ways to improve adoption
  • Track and optimize API usage metrics (e.g., active integrations, error rates, latency) and performance metrics to identify areas of improvement.
  • Help partners and customers during their integration process

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with legal and security teams to ensure M-PESA Open API compliance (GDPR, SOC 2, etc.).
  • Collaborate on API GTM, enable marketing and sales with M-PESA Open API-focused collateral, case studies, and pricing/packaging.
  • Train internal teams (support, sales) on M-PESA Open API capabilities and troubleshooting.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with an ability to anticipate roadblocks and provide proactive solutions.
  • Deep understanding of user experience, identifying user needs, and prioritizing user feedback.



Fintech background:

  • Fintech and Technical background Experience with ability to collaborate closely with engineers.
  • Good understanding of digital financial services in Ethiopia.



Working with Change

  • Experience with Agile development processes and frequent, incremental testing and deployment.

Teamwork:

  • Work well with others and achieve common goals.



Must have technical / professional qualifications:

·       Must have 1+ years of experience in product, engineering, developer advocacy, or technical support roles, preferably with a focus on APIs or developer platforms.

·       Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, web services, and modern API standards (e.g., OpenAPI/Swagger, OAuth2, JSON, GraphQL).

·       Ability to read and write code (e.g., Python, JavaScript) and debug integration issues.

·       Excellent communication and technical writing skills.

·       Experience with API management tools (e.g., Postman, SwaggerHub, Apigee, Kong) is a plus.

·       Passion for developer experience and helping partners build great products.

Desired Qualifications:

·       Fintech or Developer experience will be an added advantage.

·       Background in SaaS, fintech, or platform businesses.

·       Contributions to open-source projects or public APIs.



Financial Responsibility:

Responsible for expending OPEX within approved limits for product specific activity
